Dreamcast: Sega's Last Hope?!
Last Friday on the 22nd of May, Sega released info on their next system the Dreamcast. Now many of you must be thinking... "Oh yay, another machine from Sega..." but it's alot more than that for Sega. To Sega, Dreamcast, is their last and final hope. This may be Sega's end in the video game world...
Around a year ago Sega released the Saturn console which a few of you gamers out there rushed to your local store to take a machine home. I was nearly one of them but my manager told me he would not let me buy one, and now I'm glad he didn't.
When Sega released the Saturn they thought they wouldn't have anything lose, Nintendo still had the SNES and Sony was new to the market so why would anyone want a PlayStation?! Sega (NZ) had a big head in the video game market down here in NZ, after the success of the Master System series and the Mega Drive as these were the only systems available for sale in most stores so of course they'd sell.
3 months after the Saturn was launched, Sony released their super console, the PlayStation. It took acouple of weeks for people to start noticing the difference between both the systems. While this was happening, Nintendo was keeping quiet, preparing the N64.
After acouple of weeks of the PlayStation selling, Sony (NZ) were taken by storm and completely sold out of units for 4 to 5 weeks. People starting trying to sell their Saturns to afford a PlayStation.
Now Sega (NZ) have made a big lose and knocked off most the Saturn range, and gotten into PC and PlayStation games which is keeping them alive. (Remember Tomb Raider?! This was brought to you by Sega Ozisoft!) Sega seems to have learned a listen from Sony and Nintendo and are getting ready for the next console, Dreamcast.
The Dreamcast is now in producion and getting ready for a launch in Japan on the 20th of November this year. VideoGames.co.nz will be one of the first places in NZ to have one :)
The new system will also have a PDA unit which will let gamers use this as a memory card thanks to flash memory. It will also feature a calendar, clock and planner function with an LCD display.
VideoGames.co.nz will keep you up to the date with what happens with Dreamcast. We think the machine will launch well overseas but not too well in New Zealand with the way Sega have treated their customers. I mean why would customers fork out their cash to see another machine flop?! Only time can tell.
